Indie Bookshop of the Month: May 2023 - Tertulia
This month we’re taking you to Westport, County Mayo in Ireland. Tertulia bookshop is owned by Brid and Neil, who fell in love with Westport after taking a wrong turn! Tertulia is a space for book lovers, film lovers, a place to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, meet old friends and new, chat about books and more! This indie bookshop is a perfect fit with Salon as the word tertulia means; a type of literary salon that was popular in Spain from at least the 17th century!
When did you first open your doors?
July 2019
Do you remember the first book you sold?
The Moon’s a Balloon by David Niven
What has never gone out of stock (because it’s always popular).
This is Happiness by Niall Williams. It is a beautifully written story with everything a novel should be - empathic, funny, a fly on a wall into a group of people's lives, it is a story of two men's friendship which is quite unique too and it has a historical and cultural context for Ireland.
Is there a book you’d refuse to sell?
Not in the business of censorship.
Do you have a bookshop pet?
No.
What are you reading right now?
Heart & Bones by Niamh Mulvey, In Ascension by Martin MacInnes.
You are able to give one book to every child. Which title do you choose?
The Little Prince. This book has so much in it we can all learn from - who the others are, how to use our imagination.....
Best thing overheard in your bookshop?
“Wow this shop is amazing!”
